Stephen Joseph first introduced England to theatre-in-the-round in England during the 1950s. Believing it could revitalise theatre and attract younger audiences, Joseph established Studio Theatre Company at Scarborough Library Theatre to perform seasonal shows before touring to towns without permanent theatres; one such town being Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Hall where Joseph set up temporary performances of theatre-in-the-round in its hall.
One year later, Studio Theatre Company established itself in Hartshill at what would later become Stoke-on-Trent with a permanent base at the New Victoria Theatre – converted cinema space that became home for verbatim theatre and musical documentaries under Peter Cheeseman’s guidance. Over time, they earned international renown as one of the premier theatre companies.
Today, the New Victoria Theatre-in-the-Round serves as a vibrant hub for contemporary drama. Their program boasts both new and classic work – with special attention paid to plays with local connections – as well as being home for Gatehouse Youth Theatre who work with young people between seven-21 across Norfolk county.
