Our Commitment to Sustainable Luxury

At Acorn Lodge, we believe that enjoying a 5-star getaway shouldn’t cost the Earth. While upgrading our historic 1918 property, we have invested heavily in green technology to minimize our environmental impact without compromising the comfort and warmth you expect from a luxury holiday let.

Energy Efficiency & Water Conservation

  • Renewable Heating: Our heating and hot water are powered by a state-of-the-art Ground Source Heat Pump. Hundreds of metres of pipework buried beneath our garden extract natural heat from the ground, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

  • Solar Energy: We have installed Solar Panels to generate our own clean electricity, which powers daily essentials like our heat pump system and the luxury hot tub.

  • Insulated for Comfort: Despite being a historic property, Acorn Lodge features double-glazed windows and roof/wall insulation that exceeds standard building regulations, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.

  • Rainwater Harvesting: We collect rainwater from our gutters to flush toilets, reducing the demand on the mains water supply.

  • Smart Lighting: We utilize low-energy LED bulbs throughout the house. External security lights are motion-sensored to prevent light pollution and wasted energy.

  • A-Rated Appliances: When upgrading technology, we choose the most efficient options available, including our AAA-rated air source tumble dryer and energy-efficient washing machines.

Sustainable Travel & Local Community

  • The Great British Staycation: Choosing a UK holiday rental for your group gathering significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to flying abroad.

  • Electric Vehicle Charging: We provide a dedicated EV Charging Point in our private car park, making it easy for guests with electric vehicles to explore Staffordshire and Shropshire.

  • Public Transport: We are well-connected, with a nearby railway station (Stoke/Crewe/Stafford) and local bus services serving Ashley Heath.

  • Supporting Local: We are proud to support the local economy. Our maintenance team, housekeepers, and tradespeople all live within the local village, and we source materials from nearby suppliers whenever possible.

We love our location in Ashley Heath and respect our neighbours. Sustainability is also about maintaining a peaceful community. We kindly ask that noise is kept to a respectful level, particularly in the outdoor areas during the evening. We operate a strict policy regarding noise complaints to ensure the village remains a tranquil place for everyone to live and visit.

Eco-Friendly Housekeeping

  • Non-Toxic Products: We use environmental pioneers ‘BIO D’ for our primary cleaning products. These are effective yet gentle on the environment, supplied in refillable containers to eliminate single-use plastic waste.

  • Guest Provisions: We supply a basket of spare eco-toiletries for emergencies, ensuring no single-use plastic miniatures are wasted. You will also find complimentary eco-friendly hand wash, washing powder, and dishwasher tablets for your use.

  • Sustainable Practices: Our cleaning team uses colour-coded reusable microfibre cloths (washed and sanitized after every turnover) and ‘Ecover’ limescale removers to maintain our high hygiene standards sustainably.

Nurturing Nature in Our Grounds

  • Chemical-Free Gardening: We manage our half-acre garden without harsh chemicals, utilizing horse manure from the village livery and our own compost to feed the soil.

  • Closing the Loop: We use a local tree surgeon who supplies wood chippings for our borders. Where possible, we use logs from our own grounds for the log burner.

  • Coffee Composting: We use a ‘Grind’ coffee machine specifically because their pods are compostable. We encourage guests to use the provided compost bin for these.

  • Biodiversity: We actively encourage wildlife in our forest and garden areas. You will spot bird feeders, bird boxes, and purposefully kept hedgerows to support hedgehogs. We also cultivate bee-friendly borders and leave specific areas wild to support butterfly and caterpillar populations.

How You Can Help During Your Stay

  • Recycle: Please use the clearly labelled bins provided to separate your recycling. A guide is available in the kitchen to help you.

  • Compost: Please place vegetable peelings and ‘Grind’ coffee pods in the compost bin so we can feed the garden.

  • Refill, Don’t Throw: If you empty a ‘BIO D’ cleaning bottle, please leave it out for us—we refill and reuse them!

  • Manage the Heat: Acorn Lodge is very well insulated. If you find the house too warm, please let us know, and we will happily lower the thermostat rather than opening windows and wasting heat.

  • Conserve Energy: Please close the hot tub lid immediately after use to retain heat, turn off the sauna when finished, and switch off lights when leaving a room.
